There are approximately 2,000 shrimp species in the world. Who would have thought there would be so many options in these delectable crustaceans? Although there are so many species, in the aquaculture segment there really are 3 dominant species in the market which are, Vannamei White (Litopenaeus vannamei) Tigers (Penaeus monodon) and Freshwater Prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). On the wild side of things the most common are Gulf Brown (Farfantepenaeus aztecus), Gulf Pink (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) and Gulf White Shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus) The most rare shrimp is Pleoticus robustus and is sold as a Royal Red which has been deemed as the most delicious kind.
