Well, get your popcorn shrimp ready, sit back and enjoy the debate. There is no easy answer as both have their place in today’s global food supply. The reality is we need aquaculture to supplement the need for lean healthy protein. We cannot overfish our oceans. Today’s global population is 8.1 billion. It is estimated that the population will be 9.7 billion by 2050. Resources are limited, whether it be land or water, therefore we need to utilize current resources responsibly and sustainably to feed the world. With that said, farmed shrimp when produced in a sustainable manner is safe and a great alternative to wild shrimp. Wild shrimp needs to be pulled fished from the ocean waters with minimal impact to the environment and reduce bycatch.
