We believe that abusive labor conditions do exist in India, but it appears to be very isolated. Recent articles have pointed out that certain producers in India have such horrendous labor practices that it resembles modern-day slavery but it’s important to note that these cases are rare. As consumers we must ask a lot of questions to ensure we are not supporting these kinds of practices. Look for the exact origin in the package, as well as certifications relating to employment, such as Fair Trade. And if this is not available contact the company directly and hear what they have to say. A reputable company should have all of this information available to consumers, and if it’s not, maybe it’s time to look for a different product.
