China is the world’s top producer of farmed shrimp, The main species cultured are Chinese shrimp (Penaeus chinensis); Pacific white shrimp (litopenaeus vannamei); black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon); and Kuruma shrimp (Marsupenaeus japonicus).
However, over the last two decades, shrimp output increases in China, have mostly come from L. vannamei.
Although China is the largest producer of shrimp, in the United States the majority of the imported shrimp come from India, Ecuador, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. China tends to keep the majority of the volume for domestic consumption.
